Flavoured salt can make a world of difference in uplifting a meal you are preparing at home. Got some potato chips? Make them even more delicious with a light coating of tangy chilli salt. Suddenly your boring plate of chips is utterly delicious and more-ish.

I know I have had a few takeaway meals with flavoured chips that really outshine the rest of the meal.

But how do you replicate this deliciousness at home? Well, it is actually rather easy and in this article I will be going over the two main methods you might need to make flavoured salt at home as well as a few recipes that you could use.

So, without further ado, let’s dive right in and get started!

Methods

There are two main methods of making flavoured salt at home, the dry method and the wet method. Each has its benefits and downfalls. It is up to you to decide which one best suits you. In this section, I am going to go over both methods so that you can make a more informed decision when you try this at home.

Dry

This method is perhaps the easiest way of making flavoured salt. You will need to ensure that the ingredients you are adding to the salt are already dry before you can start the process.

So, either purchase ingredients that have been dried or dry them out yourself when you get the chance. I also recommend that you use fine sea salt if you want to use this method, as it will make the whole process that much simpler.

Wet

This method of flavouring salt will require a viscous liquid, they need to be almost syrupy in their viscosity. More watery liquids like wine will just melt the salt, which is why you would need to thicken up those kinds of liquids on the stovetop before adding them to the salt. This way you end up with something viscous enough to add to the salt without melting it.

It is important to remember that when you thicken up liquids on the stove, they will get more intensified flavour. So make sure to consider that when you are deciding the strength of your flavour choice.

A Few Flavoured Salt Ideas

In this section, I will be going over a few salt flavouring options and how to make them. There are quite literally hundreds of flavour combinations you could go for, so if you do not see what you like here, remember that there will surely be something out there that you will like.

But for now, let’s have a look at these three flavoured salt recipes.

Lemon & Lime Salt

Method – Wet

Ingredients – Lemon Zest, Lime Zest, Sea Salt

You will need to zest your lime and lemon, add the zest to the salt and mix it together using your hands. Next, you will spread the salt on a baking sheet and allow it to dry in the oven for six to eight hours at about 50 degrees Celsius.

Next, you will need to blend your dried salt, you can use a pestle and mortar or a spice grinder if you prefer. Now all that is left is to store your salt and use it as you see fit. Easy!

Chili Salt

Method – Dry

Ingredients – Dried Chili Peppers, Sea Salt

This is another very simplistic salt you can make at home. Simply add your chilli peppers into a blender with your sea salt and blitz it until it is fine. Then transfer the salt to an airtight container and store it until you need it later.

Garlic Salt

Method – Dry

Ingredients – Garlic Powder, Parsley, Sea Salt

All you have to do to make this kind of flavoured salt is mix your garlic powder, parsley and salt together and then transfer it into a container to store. You could make your own garlic powder, but that is a whole process for another article.
