Have a read over, choose the ones that seem to suit you the best, and give them a go!
Vegetables
Tomatoes
First up on here we have the legendary Tomato! YES – THIS IS A FRUIT, but most people get that wrong, so it’s GOING IN HERE! This is one that we ourselves had a crack at in 2023 using some seeds we pulled out of store bought Tomatoes – and it was going well! Right up until we realized we planted just a little bit too late in the year. They grew beautifully, but didn’t quite have time to ripen before the cold set in, and they sadly perished.
But the joy of Tomatoes is that from every little seed that you nurture into a Tomato Plant (at the right time of year for your climate), you will get back a fair few Tomatoes! So if you are planting a garden full of these seeds, you are going to get a lot of return! The average Tomato Plant will produce 20 to 90 Tomatoes, so you can imagine what that looks like when you start farming a patch!
Remember to look up everything you need to know about growing your Tomatoes in your climate, and how to prune these plants! Many leaves and shoots can yield nothing and get in the way, so prune regularly to ensure all the available energy is going into the end result!
Cucumbers
If you are looking for a lower maintenance Vegetable Plant for your garden, Cucumbers are a strong choice for you! Again, Technically a Fruit, but meh. Be aware that they are quite sensitive to the cold, so need to be grown in the warmer times of year, or climates of the world.
A popular method here is to plant in stages, spreading across your planting area – so as the older plants wilt away, the younger plants move into the space and take over! It is encouraged that you harvest the Cucumbers as they reach a good stage, too – as this helps the plant to start on new growth.
As this Vegetable Plant only likes it warm and bright, they tend to grow relatively quickly, within around 6 weeks – so get started once the frost is gone and the soils are warm, and get as much out of the season as you can!
Lettuce
A big advantage to Lettuce is that, rather than an individual plant giving you hundreds of harvestable clusters – you can easily plant a lot of these very close together, and they grow pretty fast! On average, a Lettuce takes around a month to be ready for picking.
Well known for being a “Shoulder” plant, these find those middle-stage seasons ideal for growth! Whether it’s that moment before Winter becomes Spring, or when Autumn is creeping back into Winter, Lettuce love it. Factor in their swift growth, and you can see why this works so well.
Of course, growing outside, on the ground, they are easy targets for insects and animals. You will need to take great care and vigilance – so look up the proper care methods, and you could be well on your way to a huge return year-on-year.
Peas
If you don’t have a very wide space to grow in, Peas might just be the right choice for you. These beauties grow vertically, so as long as you have the height clearance of 4 to 6 feet you should be fine!
Once that Winter chill has abated, the time has come to get these growing. Do this right, and you will have weeks of steady produce coming in – right up to summer, if the heat stays away long enough!
Do your research on your preferred type of Peas, as there are plenty of them to choose from – or even do an experiment with several different ones! Whatever you choose, when properly cared for, you will have an amazing harvest.
Beans
Finally, we look at Beans – Pole Beans specifically. Much like Peas, these grow vertically, so you can apply much of what we said there, here. Though, take care, as these can easily grow to greater heights – think 10 feet tall! Taking up less broad space compared to a bush variety of Bean, Pole Beans have been known to consistently out-yield them still!
These are also among the fastest Vegetable Plants from seed to harvest – so get this right, and you can be harvesting the pods over and over again through Spring and into Summer! Watch out for your usual types of pest, though, or you won’t be the one reaping what you’ve sown!
With the right research, and planning, you can definitely make this work – provided you have the head-room!
Final Thoughts
