Have you ever picked up one of those fancy jars of peanut butter in your local store and nearly dropped it as soon as you noticed the ghastly price? Yea, me too… The nice quality peanut butter is often extortionately priced, and the cheaper version just does not hit the same.

But, what if I were to tell you that it is RIDICULOUSLY easy to make your own peanut butter at home?

Well, get ready because it really is super easy to do, and you just need a few ingredients and a food processor to do it. In this article, I am going to tell you everything you need to know and more about making peanut butter at home.

So, without further ado, let’s dive right in and get started!

What Do You Need to Make Peanut Butter?

Peanut butter is ridiculously easy to make at home, the whole process takes only ten minutes, and you end up with a delicious homemade spread that you can enjoy for a fraction of the price. But what ingredients do you need?

  • Roasted Salted Peanuts – You will need about 300 grams or 2 cups
  • Peanut Oil – Optional ingredient, 1 tablespoon of peanut oil
  • Sea Salt – Optional ingredient, ¼ teaspoon of sea salt
  • Honey – Optional ingredient, 1 tablespoon of honey

It’s that simple! A lot of the ingredients are even optional, so you can make peanut butter that suits your preferences. Also as a side note, you can make this a vegan condiment as you replace the honey with a syrup of your choice, or do away with the sweetener as it is optional.

The main tool you will need for this recipe is a food processor, so make sure you have one on hand if you fancy making peanut butter at home.

Making Peanut Butter Step-By-Step

Now we get to the fun part, in this section, I will give you the step-by-step information you need in order to make the perfect peanut butter. Don’t be scared, it is a super simple process and something anyone should be able to do without worrying.

Step 1 – Toss Your Peanuts into a Food Processor

We are jumping right in, toss all your roasted peanuts into your food processor and turn it on. The mixture will look kind of crumbly for a while, but after a few minutes, you should start seeing clumps come together. You may even notice the peanut clumps sticking to the side of the food processor, when this happens you are ready to jump to step 2.

Step 2 – Add the Peanut Oil

This is an optional step, if you continue to blitz the peanuts everything should come together and smooth out after about five minutes. However, I have found that using peanut oil helps everything come together a little quicker. If you want to add the oil, this is the point you would do so, while the machine has stopped you can also scrape the peanut paste off the sides of the food processor. With the oil added and sides scraped, turn the processor back on and allow the mixture to blend until you have a delightful, smooth peanut butter paste.

Step 3 – Add Your Sweetener and Sea Salt

This is also an optional step, once your peanut butter is nice and smooth you can add the honey and salt. Remember that you can add as you see fit, the quantities I have given are based on what I like. With these ingredients added, simply pulse the food processor until everything has combined thoroughly.

What if You are Allergic to Peanuts?

But, what if you have an allergy to peanuts? Are you doomed to never try this delicious condiment? Sadly yes because you have an allergy and might die if you consume peanut butter.

But not all is lost. There are other kinds of nut butter that you can have instead. (Insert funny haha joke here)

You can make a tasty spread out of just about any nut or seed. But some common alternatives are as follows: Almond butter, sunflower seed butter, tigernut butter, and many more. Obviously, make sure that you do not have any allergies to these options, as some are still nuts. But, at least you know that there are some alternative peanut butter options that you can try instead.

FAQ

In this section, I will be answering some of your most frequently asked questions regarding peanut butter and how to make this classic condiment at home.

Is it cheaper to make your own peanut butter?

Yes, simply buying the raw peanuts, and roasting them yourself to make peanut butter at home is vastly cheaper than purchasing a store-bought brand. You also get the perk of making it to your preference.

How long will homemade peanut butter last?

If you are properly storing your peanut butter in an airtight jar at room temperature it will last approximately two months. If you are storing it in a refrigerator it will last about six months.

Why is my peanut butter not creamy?

If you have noticed that your peanut butter is not quite as smooth and creamy as you would like, you can add a little more oil to the mix. Remember that even a little oil will make a big difference. So, add it very slowly to your peanut butter and mix well before adding more.

Is it better to use a blender or a food processor for peanut butter?

I recommend a food processor as it has fittings that are designed for jobs just like this. But you can use a blender if that is all you have, remember that you may need to alter the quantities depending on the size of your appliance and what fittings you have on hand.

Can you freeze homemade peanut butter?

If you are sure that you will use this homemade condiment quite quickly after it has thawed, then freezing could be an option. Especially if you are using peanut butter for a recipe like cookies, smoothies, cake, or other tasty treats.
